SEASON'S BIGGEST FISH

Shannon Street, Ohakune resident Jim Hanright may have gained himself first place in the biggest trout catch race for this season. Last Wednesday night at about 8.30pm he landed a four kilogram (9.5lb) jack out of the Taonui Stream, north-west of Ohakune. He was using a 2.5 kg (6lb) breaking strain cast and a khaki green fly. "I had that fish on last year, lost it, hooked it again earlier this year and lost it," said Mr Hanright. "I hooked it again last week and finally managed to land it Wednesday night." He said the first two times the fish broke the line and the third time it bent the hook and released. The fish almost managed to escape the fourth time also, when it almost went through the bottom of the angler's net.
