FRIGHT TO CURE HICCUPS

'Gossip' has heard of a new and apparently very effective cure for hiccups. However, while the cure appears to guarantee success, we do not necessarily recommend it. At last week's sitting of the Ohakune District Court, the local probation officer suddenly and apologetically developed a very audible case of hiccups but, because her presence was required in court, she was unable to excuse herself and leave the room. Seeing and hearing the probation officer's predicament from the opposite side of the courtroom, the wise and worthy Judge (who indeed may have performed such a miracle before) offered her a term of imprisonment for contempt of court. In graciously declining His Honour's invitation, the probation officer found herself instantly and miraculously relieved of her symptoms and court proceedings were able to continue in silence.
