78 MAKES 2797

This story has to go to the top of the list. Rangataua man Tim Whale, who informants say is 78 years old (or there abouts), offered to drive a young Englishman guest up to the Turoa car park recently. The young man was planning to climb to the Ruapehu summit. According to reports Mr Whale decided to go with the young man to keep him company, "because it's a lonely walk you know". They took about seven hours for the round trip, taking in good views of the crater and the surrounding countryside. The only poor-show part of the jaunt seems to have been when the pair walked past the top of the chairlift as it delivered some other climbers, halfway to the target, ( lazy young whippersnappers!)
