The Mountain Classic is the main tournament run by the Waiouru Golf Club and it draws competitors from all over the North Island.
The Classic has now been running since 1982 and has been won by such notable golfers as Brenda Rhodes, John Gaskin and John Gathey. The Classic is a 36 hole open stroke-play tournament. This year 33 golf clubs are participating in the field of 108 players on Saturday February 25. Competitors hail from Auckl and to Wellington and Napier to Wanganui to play in this tournament which is highly regarded for its friendliness and hospitality. The winners from the previous years are unable to attend this
year so organisers say it could be the year for a local player. John Summerhays, Trevor Barnard, Gary Allenby from the Waimarino, or Lloyd Shuttleworth, Maurie Edwards or Jimmy Gibb from Waiouru all stand a chance of winning. It's not a totally male dominated tournament as ladies are elligable to play for the championship if they play off the blue tees. Women attending are Daisy Seiringer, a one handicapper from Manor Park, and Vicki McNabb on a six handicap from Castlecliff. Both of these women are more
than capable of winning The Waiouru Golf Club is the highest 18 hole golf course in New Zealand and with the trees growing and tightening up the course a true test of golfing skill is ensured.
