A QUICK READ ON WAIOURU NEWS

The annual gardening competition in Waiouru was judged between January 28 and February 6.

This competition is open to all residents in Waiouru. The Carriapa Shield will be presented to the Best Section and Garden Winner. The shield was donated in 1956 by Major General Carriapa who was a former Indian High Commissioner to New Zealand. He is now 86 and lives in India. Out of a maximum of 100 points judging is divided into 15 point divisions for each of the following: appearance from the street, design and harmony of layout, display of flowers, lawns, hedges and shrubs, with a maximum of 25 points

being given for the section's vegetable garden. The judging is done in two stages. Initially all sections were judged by a panel and the best 12 went onto the second stage. The judges for deciding the best section were Major Parsons, Mrs Pat Bestic and Mr Ediweera. The final place getters were:- 1st - Mr and Mrs Des Forest, 2nd - Mr and Mrs Hodges, 3rd - Mr and Mrs Webb. Prizes included a variety of garden accessories and each person who made it to the final 12 were given a shrub.
