DACRE'S CLAIM.

(A Correspondent.)

SOCIAL,

. JL very- enjoyable social took place in Dacre's Public Hall on Wednesday evening, September 2nd, being organised by the officers and crew of the s.s. Kawau, who must feel highly gratified at the successful issue of their first venture in providing entertainment for their longshore friends. The musical arrangements were placed in the competent hands of Mr J. G. Derecourt, who, assisted by Messrs Matthew and Weakley, maintained a spirited interest throughout the evening. As a pleasant surprise Capt. Moir and Mr Humphrey inaugurated a waltzing competition each donating a handsome prize which, after keen competition, fell to Miss Harper and Mr Matthew.

bravo!

Our Big Omaha friends have practically illustrated what may be done in the way of co-operation** by a few settlers determined on progress. Being unable, at the present time, to supply the necessary number of cows to entitle them to a creamery and despairing of inventing the necessary aerial power of transport to the Matakana butter factory, they have provided site, timber, labour, and station free of cost, the company suppyling the necessary plant the cost of which will not exceed £150. Farmers similarly situated and actuated by the same desire could not do better than follow this precedent and would, we venture to state, receive favourable consideration from any company.
