DOME VALLEY.
(A Correspondent.)
The monthly meeting of the Dome Valley Band of Hope was held in the Methodist Chapel, Dome Valley, on Friday, September 4th. Owing to the wet weather and muddy state"of the roads the attendance was not so large as usual. An enjoyable and profitable evening, however, was spent by those who did come. Mr Petherick, vice-president, occupied the chair. The meeting was opened by singing hymn 323, and prayer. The chairman made a few brief remarks, stating that the chief attraction to-night was* a lecture by Rev. G. T. Marshall, but there were also some musical items and. recitations. Mr Herbert Phillips and Miss Bertha Phillips then sang a duet, " I Must Have the Savionr With Me." Rev. Marshall then gave the first part of his lecture, showing the relative values as food, of bread, milk, grape juice, porter beer, and brandy; also the effect of alcohol on the muscles and brain, including the nerves. Mr Evans then gave a recitation, "Billy's Rose." Rev Marshall then spoke on the effect of alcohol on the blood, and on the stomach. Mr T. Oakes then sang " Just Make Them Willing to Go," and being encored sang " Think of the Little Ones at Home." Rev. Marshall then spoke of the effect of alcohol on the digestive organs, and also the longevity of total abstainers, as compared with drinkers • from reports compiled by the insurance companies ; and concluded by exhorting all who wished to enjoy good health, and long life to be total abstainers. The lecture was illustrated with about a dozen diagrams, which brought each subject vividly before the eye Master Allan Petherick gave a recitation "Where There's Drink There's Danger."' A vote of thanks wss proposed to Rev Marshall for his interesting and instructive lecture which was carried by acclamation. The meeting concluded by singing hymn 4IS and the Benediction. ' .
