RELIGIOUS STATISTICS.
A table has been rjrepared by the Registrar-Genera 7, showing (exclusive of Maoris) the number of persons belonging to the different religious denominations in New Zealand, according to the census of 19 1, compared with the census of 1896. In the principal denominations the results are shown to be as follows : —
Church of England, 314,21 (increase 32,858). Presbyterians, 17 6,53 (increase 16,551). Boman Catholics, 1 8,96 (increase 11,435). Wesleyan Methodists, 71,004 (increase 7,661). Baptists, 16, "35 (decrease 2). •Primitive Methodists, 1,14 3 (increase 3.1 2 i. Salvation Arinv, 7,999 (decrease 2,533). Brethren, 7,484 (increase 2,449). Congregationalists, 6,699 (decrease 78;. Church of Christ, 6,15 (increase 246). Most of the smaller bodies show increases. There are the usual returns regarding nondescript, bodies. Persons of no denomination have increased by 84 2, while freethinker show a decline wf 1,127, Persons who object to state tho nature of cheir belief, increased by 2,328.
