Awqtiier attempt is being made to (introduce the beetrsugar industry in Wa'ikato, The position ip someyrkat peculiar. When after years- of effort, an apparently tangible scheme oame into view it involved % guarantee on the part of the farmers that they would grow a certain area of roots. The project, as we all know, fell through, and no^ it is the farmer who want 3 a guarantee that if he grows the roots the market shall be forthcoming. We cannot find any fault with the farmer for tl>i», but ther-e is another aspect pf the question, which he will do well to consider, We have referred to thjs. often before, but we advert to it no.w the more especially because there there is something nu-im than a probability that th« farmer will soon be the sole proprietor of the staple industry of the district of —dairying, The adaption of the system of winter dairying in its entirety cannot be long delayed, and the supplier will be obliged to take into his serious consideration the subject of winter feeding, The merits of the sugar beet are thus bound to force themselves upon his notice, and if he will be thus enabled to lay the found- i atidns of an industry without being! called upon to make any sacrifice.
