BUBPLUS OF £532,561. The Financial Stitemeiit was submitted to Parliament on Fa-iday night t The main features being, the largo increase in the public revenue £5, 906,916 being a i-ecord jo&v. The net result of the year's operations was a surplus of J&532,564. In the--Customs receipts large increase took plaeeTia ifchs consumption of spi/its, to* aeeo, sugar and advalorem goods. The Treasurer, in dealing with the j Public Works Fund, counsels moderation, especially in view of the stringency of the money market. He considers that the North Island Trunk railway is a work of national importance demaupmg special provision. Power will be asked to raise a loan of one million pounds sterling. A cihetailed list of the estimates ere not yet to hand, but the following are a few items of interest taken from the geneial estimates:— The expenses of the visit of the Imperial troops are estimated at £3000, The Hoyal Commission on. Federation cost £3800. The sum of £5100 is placed on the Estimates for the oil-engined schooner Countess of Kanfurly, The sum of £17,000 is set down for the San Francisco mail service, as against £17,570 expended last year.; Suez mail services, £4000, expended last year. £5870. ,1 The PostalDepartnient is estimated to cost £441,214, as against £416,364 expended last year. For the Custom* and Marine Departmeut, £89,071 is being ask«d, the sum expended last year being £87, 038, Subsidies io public libraries reimin 'at £3000, the same as last year.For railways £1,152,000 is asked, as against £1,127,848 changed lasi I year. The expenses attending the detection of sly grog-selling were £541 last year, and £462 was expended in ro■jj wards for convictions recorded. The expenses of the contingents to Australia in connection with the" Com- : mpEwealth celebrations were £5000, i Last year £96,000 voted for the msi .of the South Africa contingents, Oi i that £87,997 was expended, and this year £30,000 is asked for; £500 is set dovrn for allowances to relatives oJ ;d( ceased members of New Zealand • contingents. - ' ■ \ Last year the administration of the M)\d Age Pensions Act cost £3101.
