American Athlete Causes Mild Panic
There was a mild panic aboard a Wanganui " river steamer chartered by the Wanganui Amateur , Athl^tie and -Cycling Clu1> to take sports competitors, including . the visiting American athletes, upriver after the recent sports. When the vessel was passing Upokongaro, All Hershey dared the American middle-distance runner, John Fulton, to take a dip in the river. F-ulton dived from the canopy a-bove the hoat. The Americans' manager, Mr. A. C. Kitto, and his companions thought Fiulton had fallen from the vessel. To cries of "Man overboar-d!" the vessel slewed around and headed , back down-stream to catch Fulton, who ; had -been carried some distance by the i current. Later, at Kaiwhaiki, he repeated the perf-ormance iri calmer ' wateif, but this time there was not so much panic.
