A GREAT ARTIST

Leo. Cherniavsky At Regent, Thursdav Leo Gherniavs.ky's name is no new one to this country. Years ago he paid his* first visit as one -of the famous Cherniavsky Trio and has sinee return ed several times. Last Saturday he appeared at the Town Hall in Auckland, as solo violinist with a standard of playing that excels anything heard in recent year?. The enthusiasm of his audience, whieh must have ineluded many oi' his admirers of former years, inereased with every number, and at the end of his recital he was recalled again and again. With his dignified bearing, his white hair and the mobility of his faeial expression, his is an impressive stage presence, harking back to the virtuoso 'of the past, and the musie that comes from his violin is woiThy of those same traditions. Cherniavsky gave his audience two hours of sheer delight. One is struck most of all with' the beauty of.his tone. In moments of climax it is powerful, but for the most part it is most delicately controlled, and of indescribable beauty in such places as the slow movement of the Nardini sonata in D major whicb opened his programme. With this." is allied immaeulatc phrasing and the techpieal ease that belongs only to one who is master oi' liis insfrument. Such oualities as these belong only to the few and Leo Cherniavsky is among their number. Box plans are now open for the Rotorua recital on Thursdav.
