It is "thistledown time" again, and the wind of the weelc-end sent literally millions of thistle seeds with t'heir fluffy parachutes soaring across the Rotorua district on 'Saturday and Sunday last. The seeds were most noticeable on the Hamurana road from Ngongotaha. Bairacks Weelc Ended Although mixed weather was the experience of the High School Cadet Battalic-n , during its week's training. in barracks, the final day yesterday, for striking cainp, was fine and clear. Although two periods of training were included in the morning's work, tents had been struek, the camp cleared, everything jiacked, and the boys were on their way home by 3.15 p.m. The House competition conducted during the week resulted in Drake gaining first place, with Raleigb second. These bands are Woolston, Wellington Waterside Silver, Queen Alexandra's Own, Palmerston North Garrison, St. Kilda, Wanganui Garrison, Kaikorai (all previous winners), Invercargill Civic and Hawera. The last-named band- is in the A grade for the first time. Wagon, Derailed i The broad, blue sea is not the o-nly place where a ship can getfa roeking, as a small motor-hoat "Cling," shipped by rail, ^ discovered in the Rotorua yards yesterday when the goods truclc upon which it was loaded jumped the points. The craft was only saved a complete capsize through the strength of the connecting link to the engine which miraeulously kept the wagon teetering until raihvay employees restored its equilibrium. Shunting traflic was held up for some time until the wagon was again replaced on the rails. Portibn of the front bogey of the engine had also been ddrailed and there was slight damage to the traclc. Picture Patrons Alarmed Many hearts thumped slightly harder last evening, towards the end of the sereening in the Regent Theatre,^ but the eause was not the dazzling heroine nor the handsome hero. The cause was a very unpleasant smell — a smell that suggested that the building* was on fire. Some people started towards the door, but on being assured by 'fhe manager that there was no danger, they returned to their seats. -The cauge of the smell was a faulty motor in refrigeration machinery behind the soda counter in the Vestibule. The draught carried the odour into the theatre but the removal of . the fuse allowed patrons to resume their seats ancl their normal puise.
