Film Designers' Models to Be Adapted
Exciting c'lothes, created for film stars by Edith Head, were shown at a recent fashion show at the Waldorf Astoria. Some of the original models i are unsuited for day-to-day wear by people who have no obligations to Hollywood eaineras, ,but many of thc designs are being adapted by leading New Yorlc stores for public sale. Desigiis ranged from softly tailored suits for day wear to "femme i'atale" gowns of the slinky variety for evening. Edith Head is designer-in-c-hief for Paramount Pictures, and the clothes displayed were created for wear by Loretta Young, Joan Craw-for-d, Dorothy Lamour, Betty Hutton and J^an Fontaine, in six forthcoming* films. Negligees, nightgowns, and lounging pyjamas designed for Loi-etta Young will. be the first available to- the public of America. The perfect ex^ution of the costumes was impressive. . Fabrics were handsome, workmanship and artistry of such things as bead embroidery were exquisite. Clothes bore all the fine touches generally expected of the best couture salons. A vvhite pique evening gown made for Miss Lamour, with a tight hodice and bouffant skirt, was outstanding'^ in charm. Jet beads in an open vvork mosh vlesign were draped like a bertna from the i'ront of the shoulders, across the back, and at the front of the skirt like huge apron pockets. A few eharaeteristic tricks were noticebale in this collection. For example, the bare-back midi'iff was scen 011 several evening gowns. Other distinctive evening desigms inch-ded a mauve talfeta dress with a bustle back of transparent matching tulle and little flowers. Roman stripes appeared in a heavily draped lame, and in a soft oversirirt of clinging blue jersey. A one-shouldei- evening gown will be adapted for public sale as a hostess coat in rayon jersey. The oneshoulder idea will be cairied out in adapiion, by use over one shoulder of contrasting print of pale bk'e against a baekground cf royal blue. One of the smartest suits was a raw white silk design with jacket lining and blouse made of a pimento crepe, printcd in white. A group of "look pretty while you work" suits ineluded four designed originally for Joan Crawford. Among these were a tailored dark red flaiinel, and a dark blue flannel done with dressmaker Jetails. Edith Head's "at home" creations were ravishing. These were ineluded in the Loretta Young group. Oiutstanding was the mysteriously named "fisherman's" coat, in white chiftkm with demure bow-tied neck, rippling back and hillowy sleeves, with tight caught cufT s. It is woi'n as a negligee with a matching nightgown of black lame ovcr tlesh tojte silk. The adaptions will reverse the eoloar sciieme — the coat will be black and the nightgown will ho in white satin ti'imme.l in bands of satin on ecrti net at the bustline.
