WELLINGTON. Last Night. Mr. Justice Ong!ey,N chairman of the Waterfront Inr clustry Commission, is underr tcod to have handed in his resignation to the Government yesterday. This annotmcement is not official but it is> cxpected to be confirmed within the next few days. His. Hcnor's position has* become^ untenable since the Goyern: • : ment deeided this week to re- - write his decision on the.: guaranteed wage for water*-' r.siders. The Waterfront Commission Will he reconstituted on a new basis Ahd with new personnel. Special regulations providing fdr this and permitV ( ing the Minister of Lahour to amertd +l:e guaranteed wage order are bei'h^;. orepared and will, it is understopd, br> introduced by Order-in-Council, ;. The reconstituted commission, will' roquire some replacement amqhg niesent memhers. Neither the em.4 ployers' representatives, Messrs K. '^ Belli'ord' and G. L. Almond, nor theyorkers' representatives, Messrs . HJ - P ?rnes and J. Flood have indicated •nV intention of resigning. Mr. Bell- ' u'd has publicly declarod that he will not resign and the union representatives are reported to have said that they have no power to do so., K any memhers of the Commission are to- be moved therefc-re, Government 'mtion will be necessary. ... ' Law draughtsmen are reported to ho working on the regulations whidh will cover all aspects of the unusual -ituation which has developed. Meanwhile an official statement * of the agreement reached this week-. hetween the Government and thfc New Zealand Waterside Workferi* Union on the union's grievances has been delayed and may' not be made until next week. ; The Minister of Labour, Mr. A. McLaglan, ha? left for Christchurch Mr. Bellford has deelared that the* Government agreement- with the 'uiion is a complete capitulation. ";.He -ud Captain M. T. Holm, secretaj'y -{ the New Zealand Waterside 3m*loyers' Association, have stated thdt ho Government has not informed ■:hem of the agree|ient reached. It was now reported that a guaranocd wage will ^be provided on a •veelcly basis and not f our-weekly, as : 'n the judgment issued by Mr Ongley•n November 28 last.
