The naval transport Merrick (17,000 tons), carrying 323 men, was crippled when she struck a jagged ice-floe in the Ross Sea, says thej Associated Press corresopndent aboard fhe U.S.S. North Wind. «- t The Merriek's rudder was smashed. She was taken in tow by the icebreaker North Wind after a feat of daring seamanship, and is heing towgd through the ice pack in a heavy gale towards Scottish Land, 100 miles northward. After the accident occurred the Merrick drifted helplessly into the heavy ice pack area, but Captain Charles Thomas manoeuvred the North Wind alongside in defiance of the wind and the ice, and secured towing lines.
