To-day's Weather Forecast The Government Meteorologist has issued the following weather report and forecast: — Situation: A'n intense anti-cyclone is centred near the Chatham Islands covering most of New Zealand. A depression lies horth-east of the North Island. . This distribiition of pressure caused strong on-shore winds in eastern districts of the North Island with scattered rain yesterday afternoon in the Auckland Peninsula. Forecast for Rotorua to midnight: Moderate or fresh southeasterlies predominating. Weather fair and mild. There was a noticeable drop in temperature yesterday, the maximum recording in the town area up to 4 p.m. being- 69 degrees, compared with 73.1 on Monday. . An overcast sky and changing winds threatened heavy rain throughout the day, hut only .05 inch was recorded hefore sunset. ' Appeal by 30,000 Club The appeal of the Rotorua 30,000 Cluh against .the decision of the Hamilton Land Saies Committee in respect to the proposed purchase of a property in Pukuatua Street for a Plunket and Ladies' Rest Room will be heard ; by .the Land Saies Appeal Court in : Hamilton on February 19.

R'ecord at' Juhilee Function What is reg-arded as a'record in attendanee at old pupils' functions was established re'eently at the golden jubilee celebrations of the Maitland Village School in Southland. On the opening- day of the school in 1897 the roll numbered 22. Five of these firstday pupils have died, one is at present in Australia, and the remaining16 attended the celebrations. No Shortage of Cigarettes! Adequatg quantities of cigarettes and tobbacco are assured for at least several months, states a .Wellington paper. Supplies already imported are being supplemented by large quantities that will continue to afrive from Britain and Canada. Considerable quantities are needed, since it'is estimated that 5,000,000 cigarettes are consumed daily in New Zealand. Mill Stopped by River Cut It is reported that an insufficient supply of suitable water in the Manawata River loop has led to the cessa~tion of woivk at the New Zealand Woolpaclc and Textiles' stripping mill at Foxton. The situation in which the mill is placed has resulted from the cutting- ofF of the river loop by tlie Whirokino cut. Work will be resumed _as soon as a suitable supply of water can be obtained. The company intends making alterations to the water intake. Heavy Goods Traffic Goods trafhc through the Rotorua and Ngongotaha railway yards has been particularly heavy during- the past weeks. Almost daily, heavilyloaded timber trains leave the station bo-und for mills in the Auckland province. Shipments of fat lambs to the freezing works are also maintaining their level, and when these tail off cattle shipments are expected to start. Passenger bookings are still brisk though the present three-days-a-week schedule is proving adequate. State Housing at Tamaki The building- ' of a State housing settlement larger than the town of Napier, with residential accommodation for 30,000 people, 10 schools, a modern business and community centre and spacious recreation reserves is under way in Auckland. That, in brief, is the vast housing- project known as the Tamaki housing- scheme, planned hy the State Housing- Construction Department. It is estimated to ^ost approximately £15,000,000, and to be eompleted in 10 years' 'time. Ascent of Mt. Cook For the first time. since January 1, 1944, the high peak of Mount Cook (il 2,349ft), was asceiuled on January 30. The elimbers, Mr. E. P. Hillary, of Auckland,, and Mr. C. S. Brockett, of Blenheim, with Mr. H. Ayres as guide, used the Linda route and made the elimh in 18 hours. Conditions were . excellent except for an unpleasant wind on the last part of the climb. The third hig'hest peak of Mount Cook was elimhed on February 3 hy Mr. R. A. Winn, of Christchurch, with the guides Messrs. A. Mace and M. Bowie. County Approves Hospital I.oan , Approval of the Hawke's Bay Hospital Board's proposal to raise a lhan of £250,000 was given by the Hawke's Bay County Council. The loan was to provide buildings at the Napier and Hastings hospitals, said the chairman Mr. R. Harding, and with the rate ' stabilised, ratepayers wOuld not be ; directly affected. The buildings were • urgently needed, particularly qs accommodation for nurses, said Mr. C. j Lassen. Some wards had had to be ! closed, and maternity facilities could ■ not be -used because of the prohlem ' of providing nurses' accommodation.
