Anna Mayer, 26, the "hiccup girl," oi New York, will' never hiccup again. • An operation by Dr. Lester Sanuiels ' severed her right phrenic nerve ancl ended 58 days of hiccups, during which j Miss Mayer's weight dropped from ; '1181b to 821b. . In 1944, Dr. Samuels severed her left phrenic nerve to end a 47-day bout of hiccups. • The operation was performed hy cutting into the thorax from above the collarbone and removing qne and a half inches of the right phrenic nerve. _ Dr. Samuels was granted speeial leave from the Veterans' Hospital, in Louisiana, in response to a direct request from Miss Mayer to President Truman to authorise Dr. Samuels to operate. Her hiccup ing was intermittent .for the first 20 days of the latest attack, but for the next 38 days Miss Mayer hiceuped 60 times a minute.
