CREWS OF SAILING CRAFT RESCUED
500 PICKBD UP IN 'SYDNEY SYDNEY, Feb. S1 When a s'udden southerly gale swept ydney Harbour during a yachting vent yesterday afternoon, water -olice, NaVy and Army launches and u'ivate craft rescued over 500 people. The storm broke when most of the vowd were taking part in the harbour | vents out in open water near South Iead. In a few minutes the crews, iniuding many women, were struggling 1 choppy water; The water police ■'one rescued 120, among whom were 2 women. "When the police launches | 'ound that they could not cope with , he situation they called -on the Navy. rhich sent two crash boats. The Army , vater transport section also sent two [ loats. Long after nightfall people ; ,ere still being picked up and some i ■f these had been in the water for vel over two hours and were in an exlausted condition. The blow canjsed much damage to .he Sydney sailing fleet, but there vere not casualties. ,
