HERSHEY BREAKS TWO FIELD RECORDS
Americans Win at Dunedin Meeting DUNEDm, SAY /. The highlight of the Dunedin appearance this afternoon of the two American athletes, Don Campbell and Al Hershey, was the brilliant forni prodnced hy Hershey in field events. The American was succ-cessful in liis attempt to break the New Zealand record in putting the shot in the invit«tion event with a great throw of 52ft. lin. The previous record was 51ft." Olin., established by the American, H. P. Rothert in 1931. - • Hershey. put the shot with the assistance of a fairly steady hreeze, and" it is not known whether the record'' will -be allowed. - Again with the assistance of a fresh " wind, Hershey shattered the New Zea- " land record in the disciis event, two throws ou't of three in a speeiai at- ' tempt exceeding the record of 144ft. Oain. established also by Rothert,* * Hershey threw the discus 150ft-. 5-in. and 146ft. 3in. Campbell was not so spectacillar, but he cut down the field fast in the 1C0 yards event, and won -by about three yards aftei* conceding stairts up to five yards. His time of 10 2-5s. vvas th'e result of a slow track and he'ad wind. The sprinter stumhled hadly in the 220 yards event shortly after the start, but he recovered hrilliantly and went on to win handsomely. His time of 22 l-5s. is 1 l-5s. outside the New Zealand record. In the 880 yards wallc handicdp. J. - R. Hyslop, an Otago competftort shkttered the New Zealand record by 2-5s. standing since 1934, his time beihg 3.1 1-5.
