JONES BATTERS McCANN FOR THREE ROUNDS

Negro Seen in New Light Af Petone WELLINGTON, Sunday. Willie Jones, the negro boxer, provided some of the h^'dest punching seen in a Wellington _mg for many years when he defeated Jack McCann of Wellington, by a technical knoekout in the third round of their scheduled 12-roun'd bout at the Petone recreation grour.d yesterday afternoon. McCann deserves full marks for liis pluck, hut was no mateh for the brilliantly hard and fast punching, the cleverness and experience of his opponent. Jones aclopted cautious tactics against Murphy a fortnight ag*o, hut to-day the position was the reverse. He was brimful of confidence. Clearly a top-line boxer, he pxinched crisply with both liands to McCahn's head and body. He was quick on his feet, weaved his head cleverly and altogeiher gave McCann little say in affairs. Few boxers after receiving the hattering* McCann did in the second round would, or could have made an appearance in the third. Jones' per•formance to-day invests his forthcoming return bout with Muiphy with particular interest. The bout -was fought in sweltering heat, tempered slightly by a gentle northerly breeze. McCann, who weighed in at 11st. 5}lb., had an 1111b. advantage in weight over Jones, who weighed ilOst. 81b. Mr. Alf Claverley^ refereed.
