Girl Guides and Brownies

KUAKA.

Dear Guides and Brownies, — - " I expect that by the time you reacl this you will all be well settled back at school after your long hblidays anfi will have made.up your minds that this *will be the best year yoiu have had. Let us all renew our Profmise and take a moment to think what it means to us, as we look forward to a new term, squaring eur shoulders and marching onward through whatever may be before us, pressing ahead to thq distant borizon of peace and happiness through love and service. "On ' my honour I promise that I will do my best — 1. To do my duty to God'and ICing. 2. To help other people at all times. 3. To obey the Guide Law." A lot to think about, isn't it? It expects such a lot of us if .we are to live up to it and yet, we have promised. Don't let us forg'et that if we really keep the very first pieee, it will help us to keep the rest. Did you notice that little word "best" ? No ihalf-measures in 1947. Then notice the word before it — "my." You and I have promised to do our best, not what may be the best for Esmeralda Jane, who lives down the road and looks a bit funny and isn't exactly bright at school, but the very best that we can possibly be. The PromiSe Law leads us on to the Laws. Gan you still remember yours — or have they got a little tangled up with your latest school sspelling list? Shut your eyes and try to say them through and then make that a daily, or at least a weelcly practice as a. reminder and ;see if we can't raise the. standard • and numbers of our good fcurns, so that 1947 may be a very happy year. Here are the 10 Laws — in case anyone needs promptimg: — • 1. Guide's honour is to be trusted. 2. A Guide is loyal. 3. 'It is a Guide's duty to be useful and to help others. 4. A • Guide is a friend to all and a sister to every other Guide. 5. A Guide is courteous. 6. A-Guide is a friend to animals. 7. A Guide obeys orders. 8. A Guide smiles and sings under all diffi'eulties. 9. A Guide is thrifty. 10. A Guide is pure in _ thought, word and deed. How are the Gompanies and Packs going? All in full swing and very keen? Have you been out hiking or on other interesting- activities during bhe holldays or what are you planning for these lovely summer days? Do write and tell the rest of us about it. What a disappointment it was for the few really keen ones that the fistrict camp had to be concelled. It loesn't sound as though we have many First Class Guides, eitber with or without badges, for every First Class Guide is a. keen camper. Buck up, Rotorua Guides and see if we can't camp before the winter comes. This year, couldn't we all take part in writing our weelcly letters ? I am sure some of you -'have all kinds of ideas. |What kind of letter d b you like? Stories? Games? Quiz? Camp Notes? Any other sugestions? Come on, Guides— and Brownies! It's your colunm, so send along ideas and show ihe Guiders that you appreciate it. Do you think we might have a dis:rict inter-company challenge this year? That could be tremendous fun, >ut what will your challenge consist of — hikes, knotting, signalling, swimming? These are just a few suggestions, but we must wake everyone ap and get off to a flying start, -so don't forget, if you have any ideas — from spic and span Patrol Leaders (or even Guiders) to the newest recruit — . ;he district would like to hear about them, so write them down and give i'hem to one of the Guiders and I am ?ure they would pass them on. Who's ?oing to plan our Guide activities 'or the year? I hope i.t will 'be the Guides, not just the Guiders. Good hiking.
