W.D.F.U. TRAVEL TALK
j (From I
The January meeting of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union i was held in the Centennial Hall, Ngongotaha and was presided over by Mrs. H. Turton, dce-president, in ' the absence of the president. I Final arrangements were made for the annual flower, produce and home industries show, which has an added attraction of a baby show, a popular feature of this fixture. An interesting travel tallt was given by Miss Alice Gray, N.C.F.A. on a winter tour up the Barrier Reef to Queensland. The first call was Brisbane, then on to Mackay, Townsville and Magnetic Island, Palm Island, an aboriginal settlement, Dream Island and Cairns, where no winter is ever i experienced, said Miss Gray. For i relaxation the inhabitants go to the i hills, where the weather is delightj ful. It was at Cairns that Australian ; and American troops were trained [ for the llew Guinea campaign. i "Further on is Atherton, where I orchids which wo.uld cost pounds in | the cities, grow in wild - profusion. ! There are many varieties of wild par*rots and birds. Tropical fruits are in abundance. Going up the Barrier is so cairn between the shore and the reef that it is a popular trip, especially with elderly people and the trip from Sydney with a week-end at Cairns takes 16 days. The people of Quensland are famons : for their wonderful hospitality. | This travel talik was -enjoyed 'by | all the members and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the speaker. Afternoon tea was served' by -the ladies of the union. The Ngongotaha Marching Recreation Team added yet another first place to its list of successes when it travelled to Ohope on Anniversary Day. The team comprised of Miss Melva Stembridge (letuder), Misses Eda Stembridge, Dorothy Farmer, Claire and Pat Reidy, Cath Davies, Betty Dawson, Joyce and Mary De Erneste and • Val Richards. Many friends aiccompanied the team and with the beautifully fine weather prevailing, a real beach holiday was spent. It i^ probable that the coach, Mr. Geo. Stembridge, will be travelling to Hastings on February 22 to be present at the N.Z. Championships.
