ROTORUA CLUB'S MEETING

summer carnival revsew of fields and' prospects 5 The flags will be flying at Arawa Park to-day for the Rotorua Racing Club's annual meet- , I ing. The weather appears to j have been made to orcler. | Following is- a brief review of j the form. j

The well-bred Tatanga, who was ] last produced at Stratford on New Year's Day, was an acceptor in the ' maiden event at Matamata, but was | not produced. If she is on hand to- j •day, it may be taken for granted that ! she is ra-ce-ready. Tommy Gun has a succession of four placed perform- | ances, the last in the Matamata Railway Handicap, where he divided Hazara and Abbey Duke. Another good sighter was that of Title in the second division of the Waihi Stakes at the^Ohinemutu meeting, when she ran second to Chatacre.- The form of Pavaals, who is in a later race, has already been discussed. The favourites may be — Balancer, Tommy Gun Tatanga.

Monty and Golden Beau showed at Matamata that they possessed a good turn of speed, combined with race sense. Their most formidable opponent, however, ' is expected to be La Itita, a Te Awamutu-trained filly who was produced in the Midsummer Handicap at Ellerslie, t() run fouvth to Legal Folly in good time and subsequently was unplaeed in the Sylvia Handicap, won by Beaute 011 the final day. Ballaview was twice ri:nner-up at the ^Stratford New Year meeting, without showing much improvement between raees. She. should be on hand at the finish. Of these mentioned, the public may select — Golden Beau, Monty, La Kita

There will be plenty of scope for speculators in the Highweight. Pola, the top-weight, has three engagements and in this, his chance looks as good as in any other. Corondal has had three races this term without showing colour, but he should now be near the shape that enabled him to win at Te Rapa over a year ago. More recent form has -been shown by Battling Brave, a winner over seven furlongs at New Plymouth's Christmas meeting, and runner-up the follovving week at Stratford -to King Tissa over the same distance. Rere Ttere, Brief -and Tatanga are the best prospects among- the lightweights. The choice may be between — - Pola, Battling Brave, Rere Tere v

Diseussions on the Rotorua Cup have taken an extraordinarily wide range, due to the defection of the topweights. After a handsome win in the New Plymouth Handicap 011 De- : cember 28, Batal ap.parently called it | a day, but if he were^to he in galloping mood to-day, he would be the hardest to beat. Corot, now nine, will attempt to win his fourth successive Cup, and he has been galloping well enough to invest his chance with considerable promise. La Fillette won the second division of the Hauraiki Cup at Paeroa, and has had three races sinee then. She is now 91b. -up on her winhing weight. Morehu Park has been a consistent performer all throug'h the summer, but he failed at Marton, and has not been produced in the interval. Land Warden was the' runner-up to La Fillette at Paeroa, and he made a usef&il showing for fifth in the Matamata Cup. Our Bridge ran improving races at the Ellerslie mid-summer meeting, and this useful mare is very handily situated here-. Of those 011 the minimum, Bright Fox,- who appreciats the drop from hurdles .weights — he carried 11.12 to win "the Grafton Hurdles by

six lengths — was rig'ht -up with Iwo Jima and Tilting in the Matamata Cup. He is solid and honest. Commissar's 'chan-ces ftave been freely canvassed, in the l-ast few days. Favourites may be — ' • Our Bridge, Bright Fox, Corot

Although. they have been rehandicapped, Hazara and Gold Rock are capable of another forward showing. Top of the list is Mabel Knight, conceding 71b. to another three-year-old in Li-ght Opera, also 'Nanakea and Nancy Vaals. Euryalis, who had an nnfortunate run at Matamata, is well placed here, but he may be reserved. Hardware, Lyn Vaals, Pavaals, Reyelene and Tommy Gun form A strong lightw eight division. , In the absence of Euryalis, the publig may select — Gold Rcck, Mabel Knight, Tommy Gun

After two winning efforts on cireuit, Foxfable made such a good impression by running- third in his next start in the Suburban Handicap over a mile at Ellerslie on Anniversary Day that he will be sought after for this trophy race. G&y Fault, if this is her mission, will be a real contender on Matamata form. Cornell has -been racing well forward without reward; Hunting Park will be suited by the j'ourney. Pola is also in this race, and in his absence the favourite division may include — • Foxfable, Gay Fault, Victory Bridge

Contango has a good horse's weight in the open sprint. Those looking beyond her will be attracted by the claims of Bueno, who has been knocking consistently and is comparativeiy well ii'eated in this event. Kings' Pride has an undeniable chance on Paeroa form, through Contango and Dianiond Doll, who has been challeng•!;:g attention for some time, took on ' het company in the Devonport Handicap at Ellerslie on January 29, and v. as not disgraced. There will he eall also for Bronzeman, who ran in the following event, over seven furlongs. Of those on the minimum, Trcnch Meter should d0 best. Preference may he aceorded — Diamond Doli, King's Pride, Bueno

If reserved, Euryalis will have support, as will Trench Meter and Playfellow, who had an easy win in his last start, in the Tapu Handicap at Thames. In that occasion, he beat Eastern Charm and Quick Draw, the last-named now coming in only 21b. better on tbe weights carried. Bonnie Grey will have to improve to carry her 8.13 to the front. -Irish Poet was baclced and beaten at Matamata, after leading into the straight. He will appreciate the shorter distance to-day. Haidware and Revelene will have a share of the' pool, although both will be at good odds. The highly-rated ones may he — * Euryalis, Trench Meter, Playfellow
