TOLL OF THE ROAD DURING JANUARY
Fourteen Deaths In Motor Accidenls WELLINGTON, Last Night. Fourteen people lost their lives in road act'idents durihg January, said the Commissioner of Transport, Mr. Lnurenson, in a statement to the Press. This eompares with Ifi killed during January, 1946. Of those killed, seven were either drivers or passengers in motor vehicles and three were pedestrians. Two were motor-cyelists and one was a cyclist invc-lved in a collision with a car. It wiis noteworthy that in more than half the c-ases where the victim was the occupant of a motor vehiele, the vehicle either overturned or ran off the roadway. "This would anpear to indicate that the cars concerned were trayelling at a speed too fast for the eo-n-ditions," said the CommissioiTer. "I would again remind all motorists that when travelling on tyres that are worn or in vehicles which are not in perfeet mechanical condition, the greatest factor for safety is to- keep speed down to a minimum."
