SMUGGLED DIAMONDS
Officer Arrested By United States Customs v SAN FRAN'CISGO, February 6. Colonel Edward J. Murray has been placed under technical arrest following seizure by United States Customs officials of 210,000 dollars' worth of diamonds which he allegedly brou'ght -back from Japan. The United Press says that •'this is the largest jewel seizure ever made on the Pacific coast. The order for arrest was radioed by General MacArthur 'after United States -Customs officials informed Allied Headquarters in Japan that undeelared diamonds had been diseovered. Customs collector Paul Leake 'says that 110,00 dollars' worth of diamonds were found in Murray's pockets when he disemharked from a transport, and, a eache of more than 500 gems, worth 20'0,000 dollars, had been found in a safe deposit box after Murray gave the key to Customs inspectors during questioning. Leake said fllmrray apparently brought the cache into the United States on a previous trip to the United S-tates. General MacArthur has ordered an immediate investigation in Japan. ' 0
