VAGABOND REACHES THE END OF THE ROAD

LONDON. The Vagabond King is dead. WS1liam Ernest. Brookway, international tramp, who v/alked 50,000 miles in 35 years through Europe and South America, came to the end of the road at Newbury, Berkshire. Everywhere he went this 6ft 6in giant planted English plumstones in corners where he hoped fruit trees would flourish for the benefit of feravellers. Brookway, the oultured tramp, spoke seven languages, lcnew the patois of half a dozen capital cities, and once lived among the Apaches of Paris in the catacombs. "He did so because he loved his fellow men and because, being born a wanderer and a lover of nature, he was a true vagabond," said his widow. The vagabond's father was Russian; his mother English. He was born in a railway carriage 62 years ago. He made two fortunes, but gave most of his money away to needy people. He spurned passpoi'ts and used ingenious tricks to get across frontiers which was easy, o-wing to his skill in languages.
