Although a sprinkling of light rain fell toward the elose of «• N the day, the Rotorua Bowling Club's 45th annual open rinks , tournament opened in ideal conditions yesterday morning, and throughout the initial three rounds there were some interesting matches. The tournament was officially opened by the president of the club, Mr. A. J. White, who welcomed previous contestants and also those who were participating in the fixture for the first time, cIn the morning's 'first* round the greens were slightly holding, but under the. influence of brilliant sunshine, they soon quickened and at times became tricky, particularly during the later afternoon when there was a light wind.
Loram (Auckland), Abbot (Remuera), Turton (Huntly), Portman ' (Rotorua), Condor (Hataitai), and Gosling (Onehunga), were the only teams to win three games during the day, but McCullcugh (Rawhiti), McMeekin (Rotorisa), Watson (Mt. Eden), Gard'iner (Otahuhu), and Carroll (Auckland), who had byes during the day, also went through without loss. The title-holders, Te Awamutu, ' were without their last year's skip, Mate Borich, and went down to Peter Stewart's Matamata rink, ending the day with only two wins. Matamata had already been beaten by Onehunga, Budd "(Rotorua) lost the final game against Reid (Kaikoura), rand Pakes also experienced one defeat against his Rotorua clubmate, A. McMeekin. Section play will be continued at 8.45 this morning, when the first of another three matches for the day will be commenced. Following are the results of section play yesterday. —
