DARING THEFT OF 22 DIAMOND RINGS
WANGANUI, Last Night. Twenty-two diamond rings, the value of which has not been given officially, but at a conservative estimate, must be worth more than £1000, were stolen from the shop premises of J. Williams and Company I.imited, Victoria Avenue, on Friday. The tbeft was accomplished in a particularly daring fashion during shopping hours. Tho rings were set in a plushfinished tray for window display purposes, and it is believed that a person skilled iii lifting valuable property took up a position inside the shop near the windows, giving the appearance of a customer. Then, when opporll'.mity offered, he calmly passed a hand into the window, removed the tray, and walked out, probably after having put the tray in a bag or basket. The police have the matter in hand.
