ENGINE STRIKES TRUCK ON LEVEL-CROSSING

Vehicle Thrown 40 Feet PALMERSTON N., Last Night. . When the truck he was driving was 'struck by the northbound Napier express from Wellington, on the Monrad Street level crossing. about. a mile so-uth of the Palmerston North railway station at about 12.10 p.m. to-day, Mr. Leonard Hutton, a resident of Monrad Street, was seriously injured and the almost new vehicle was. almost completely wrecked. As far as it is known, there were no eye-witnesses to the accident, although several nearby residents heard the train whistle and a f ew seconds later, the noise of the impact as the engine struclc the truck. The vehicle was s truck amidships on the •left-hand side and thrown clear of the line about 40 feet, landing on its side partly on top of a hedge. Portions of the vehicle were strewn along the side ef the railway line. A report from the hospital to-night stated that Mr. Hutton had received concussion and general lacerations, but that his eondition was satisfactorg. * 1
