A deep depression southeast of Tasmania is continuing southeastwards. Forecast for Rotorua: Moderate variable winds, mainly from a northerly quarter. Weather fine and warm. Wanganui Track Surveyed The Cook's Gardens track, at Wan- ; ganui, where the , American halfjtmiler, John Fulton, pushed D. M. | Harrfe to 1.49 2-5 seconds, has been j surveyed and found to be two feet i xnore than 880 vards.
Sale of "Ghost" Hotel The 'Inangahua Hospital Board, Reefton, has decided to accep.t an offer of £200 by Mr. J. J. Morris for the Merrijigs Hotel, which was bequeathed to the board by the late licensee, Albert Wright. Situated in the now derelict mining village of Merrijigs, the hotel, which was fully furnished, has from time to time been visited by thieves, who have removed much of the ftirnishings and fittings, Progressive Bowling A progressive pairs competition, which attracted an entry of 48 visiting and Rotorua players, was held at xhe Government Gardens 'bowling greens yesterday in perfeet weather. In Section A, the winning skip was P. Wallwork with 4.1 wins of the five games played. The winning skip in Section B was W. K. Clark, with four wins, while the leads who won their respective sections were S. H. Hay and E. Bowmar, the last-named winning al lhis games. Coupon X202 Extended The extension of the currency ofhosiery Coupon X202 to the encl of March, was announced yesterday by the Rationing Controller, Mr. A. J. Costello. Coupon X202 was due to expire on January 31, he said, but the continued supply shortages have precluded full opportunity being given for all eoupons to be redeemed. The life of the coupon has accordingly been extended to March 31 next. Cpupon X301, also available at present, is not scheduled for cancellation until next May. ^ Two Fire Calls Two fire calls, both to the same spot 4 on the railway embankment : near the lower end of Pukuatua Street, were answered by the Fire Brigade yesterday. The first call was at 11.50 a.m., the second at 3.30 p.m. Both outbreaks were brought under control with first aid equipment. The Rotorua area is at present in a very dry state, and, extreme care should be taken with all naked flames. Lighted cigarette butts, which are frequently thrcwn from trains, can cause much damage, and the maximum penalty for causing a fire in a Fire District is £50. OfFenders are also liable to -receive a bill for the amount of damage done. *
