TARANAKI FAILING IN HAWKE CUP MATCH
PALMERSTON NORTH, last night. Little short of a miracle can novv bring success to the Taranaki Cricket Association's hid for the Hawke Cup and it is valmost a .foregone conclusion that Manawatu for the third time this season will retain the trophy. At the Palmerston North sports ground to-day Taranaki contimted batting in their first irnings, but failed to retrieve their position from the had star1> the previous day when they were two down for 13. Very strong howling hy II. Purcell, B. D. Miller, F. Collis and R. K. Adeock . constantly had the visiting batsmen in trouble and their innings closed for 147, leaving them 81 behin.i Manawata.* C. C. McVicar and D. W. Bowden laid a solitl foundation for Manawatu's second innings, and the issue was made to look very safe hy a grand partership bctween J. A. and M. A. Ongley, who ran up 80 for the third wieket and were not out at stumps. Manawatu will continue batting to-morrow with 167 on the board for three wickets, thus making them 241 runs ahead of Taranaki with seven wickets down.
