RADAR TO PEEK UNDER ICE
EQUIPMENT OF U.S. ANTARCTTC EXPEIHTION. WASHINGTON The Navy has sent on its Antarctic expedition six twin-engine Douglas transport planes equipped with stillsecret radar to indicate conformation of the ground beneath the great frozen expanse. The planes, a Navy statement explained, are -equipped with jet devices which will enable them to rise from the decks of the carrier Philippine Sea. The Navy said the planes, Navy R-4D's, will be the Lirst of their type ever launched by a carrier. Special coid weather gear and electronic equipment is installed on the planes, together wtih extra tanks to extend their range beyond the usual eight or 10 hours. They have ski attachments for use in the snow. The icebreakers accompanying the expedition are equipped with landing platforms for the six helioopters to be used. The expedition also has six P.B.M.'s, two Gruman ampibians, two ohservation float planes and one ski plane.
