LONDON. When Edith Gerish,-a cook of St. Swithin's Place, Bath, Somerset, was travelling on a lorry at Remington, near Trowbridge, Wilts, recently, she tbrew out a broken dinner plate. It landed on the head of John Burrows, of 'St. Albans, Herts, who was picnicking by the roadside. He fell unconscious. The result .was a summons for Edith at Melksham, Wilts, when the magistrate fined her 10s and ordered her to pay £3 19s costs. Edith's explanation in a letter to the court was: "I threw away the broken plate to prevent anyqne being hurt by it," •
