GARDEN CONTEST IN ROTORUA
Better Response Hoped ForFor the purpose of developing "that esteemed and desirable quality, . eommonly known as civic pride," as a previous article stated, the garden competition, organised by the Rotorua 30,000 Club, does not so far secm to be meeting with a very enthusiastic response. The apparent apathy shown by Rotorua citizens and home owners is hard to understand, when it is realised that there are many hundreds of pleasant and artistic gardens scattered throughout the borough. Inquiries yesterday indic^ted a poor response. So far, onlty- 30 entries have been taken. Most receiving officials considered the present figure to be far below expectations.
One person attributed the present poor response to the fact that many gardens were neglected over the Christmas holiday period, while owners were on vacatioh, and considered that now with most amateur gardeners home once more, there would be a considerable number of last-day entries to-day. Trophies for the competition are displayed in a Tutanekai Street flower shop window and have attracted attention during the past week. Also displayed is a large map showing the various subdivisions of the borough to facilitate judging. Entries for the competition close to-day with either of the following: Mr. H. A. Spurdle, Haupapa Street; McLeod's book shop, Tutanekai St. ; or Mr. W. C. E. George's shop, Hinemoa Street. Telephone entries may be rung to either of the following numbers: 581S (Mr. Bocthby), 820 (Mr. W. C. E. George), 586 (Mr. Spurdle), 837 (Mr. C. R. Taylor).
