Only 9250 Berths For 70,000 Intendlng Migrants CANBERRA, January 17. The availahle shipping would be insufficient to lift anything approaching the ceiling figure of 7'0,000 migrants for Australia during 1947, according to a communication received by the Alirfister of Immigration, Air. A. Calwell, from the Australian Hig^i Commisisoner in London, Mr. A. J. Beasley. State delegates at a Commonwealth conferenee on immigration learned that only 5750 shipping' berths would be availahle this year for migrants from ihe United Kingdom under the encouraged immigration plan. The total first-class accommodation would he 3500 berths. Estimates of arrivals for the next four years are: 1947, 9250; 1948, 26,600; 1949, 38,000; 1950, 47,500. The High Commissioner for the United Kingdom, Mr. Williams, said that while Britain was anxious to help, she did nott, want Australia io handpick specialists from essential industries.
