EMPLOYERS AGREE TO ; 44-HOUR WEEK

LONDON, Jan. 16. Tlie striking lorry drivers are to resume work 011 Saturday, two weeks after the stfike began, as the result- of a reeommendation to the men from a conferenee between the strikers> d elegates and the Transport and General Workers' Union. The union secretary, Mil. Arthur l>eakin, said the enlployers had undertaken to i'-einstate all workers and to take no action hecause of the strike. The new joint industrial council cstablished on Tuesday to speed lH'gotiations on the claims of the strikers met for the iirst titne to-day. It eleeted officers and made other preparations for a meeting on Sunday, when it will conoider the clafms tabled at the meeting hy the trade union members. The employers will meanwhile use the opportunity to discuss the claims. Reuter's labour correspondent says it is understood that the employers luive agreed to an eight-hour day and r 44-hour week, and overtime pay A»r time in exeess of eight hours. The Road Haulage Association has «tated, however, that the employers made no official offer hefore the ■ uincil met.
