BOOKMAKER FINED FOR SECOND OFFENCE
Justices Impose Penalty Of £50 Charged with carrying on the business of a bookmaker, Herbert Raymond Curry, of Rotorua, pleaded guilty in the Police Court yesterday, and electing to be dealt with summarily, he was fined £50 by Messrs A. G. Holland and. A. W. Downer, J.'sP. Defendant was represented by Mr. J. D. Davys. Detective-Sergeajnt A. J. White, who prosecuted, stated that on Boxing Day, in company with Constable R. O. Nixon, he visited the dwelling of defendant at 2 p.m. By the telephone was a writing pad, on which three and a-half sheets contained records of bets on the races that day, the total involved being about £200. There were also records of doubles — about £100 worth. Defendant, said Mr. White, candidly admitted the implications of the records and accepted full responsibility. He had previously been placed on probation for a like ofi'ence. "He is not a criminal; he is one of those offenders against the gaming laws; otherwise his character is quite good," added the DetectiveSergeant. Counsel said defendant had lost £50 on the day. He was not covering up his activities with another business and it was not the practice of tho Ccurts to deal severely with a nian on his second conviction. Defendant was fined £50, as stated.
