FORMER FERRY, MAORI, MAKES DARWIN
Refygees From Horig Kong ' Paid High Fares DARWIN, January 15. The former Lyttelton ferry steamer Maori, now renamed the Hwalien, and flying the Chinese fl'ag, arrived at Darwin last night with 474 European refugees from Hong Kong, Because of sh'rtage of water and fuel supplies, the vessel was forced to make Darwin her first Australian port. She -was 'originally scheduled to make Cairns later this week, but was unable to take on water at Amboina, in t'he East Indies. The immigrants, most of wbom are tradesmen and profe'ssional men, paid £185 in American dollars for a massage (this is over twice the normal f are), They will disembark at Sydney. Very few intend taking up farming as an oceupation They comprise a section of more than 2000 European refugees who were stranded in sShanghai hy the Pacific war. All have Australian lar.ding pern-its.
