W.ASHIN1GTON' : The nation's fixed coastal artillery defences, historically the final line to repel invasion and naval ibombardrnent, are being stripped down to a bare "-caretaker" status, American Army officials said recently. The changed style of waifare is primarily responsihle for the'move officials said. , The advent of ^ir bombardment, in the o:pinion of many military authorities, doomed fixe$ coast artillery ;as a defence against seaborne- attack. Coast defence strategy, they say, now places heavy reliance on highly mobile weapons in much greater depth than contemplated originally.
