Director To Be Appointed ! This Month DUNEDIN, Last Night. Twelve applications, all from Great Britain, have been received for the appointment of director of cancer research in Dunedin. The applications are at present being considered by a special committee set up in Dunedin under the ehairmanship of Professor E. D'Ath. A final selection from the recommendations of that committee will be made by the eentral committee of tft'e New Zealand Branch of the British .Cancer Research Society, under the ehairmanship of Sir James Elliott. It is expected that the name of the successful candidate will be made known later this month. • •• The new director will he in charge of the cancer research department and laboratories which will be housed in the new block ©f the Otago Medieal School. He will require a number of assistr snts, but they will not be appointed till after his arrival in the Dominion. Certain basip equippient has heen ordered, but the special apparatus reouired wili not be obtained till the new director has been consulted. Long in Operation Since 1929, a small department studying cancer has been in existence at the Otago Medical School, but sonle years ago its director, Dr. A.,M. Begg, went to Britain, and ts riow engaged at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund's laboratory in London. The New Zealand branch of th.e. British Cancer Campaign Society has * contrihuted to the British funds,'sihce: Dr. Begg joined the staff of the Lbn- ' don laboratory, hut now that a direc-v* tor is to be appointed to the canceiv department at the Otago Medicql'y School, the contribution will - cease and be diverted to research work in Dunedin.
