HEROIC FIGHT TO SAVE MINERS
Trapped Behind Wall Of Blazmg Shale LONDON, January 13. Squads of firemen and workers have been struggling the xvhole week-end in relays to force a passage into p. gallery of the Burngrange shale mine in West Calden, Midlothian, where an explosion killed one and trapped 14 xniners. Scarcely a vestige of hope remains of rescuing the miners, who are still behind a wall of blazing shale, but every effort is still being made to avert having to seal off the section. Rescue work was hindered by a lack of the latest rescue equipment, which had to be brought from Edinburgh. Hundreds of miners rushed to help in the rescue work when the pit sirens sounded the alarm. The fumes overeame several who had to be brought to the surface.
