INFORMATION SOUGHT ON WAR MEMORIALS
Cabinet Not Prepared To Subsidise Indiscriminately AUCKLAND, Last Night. Details of war memorials which local aiathorities plan to erect with the assistance of Government suhsidies are heing sought by the Department of Internal Affairs. "You will appreciate that, before the Government can approve any war memorial for subsidy purposes, it will be riecessary to consider the proposal very thoroughly and from many different points of view," says Mr. J. W. Heenan, the Departmental UnderSecretary, in a letter to the Auckland tcwn clerk, Mr. T. W. M. Ashby. "It is vital to ensure, so far as humanly possible, that community centres subsidised by the Government should continue to develop in their usefulness .to the community," he adds. "In direct proportion, we believe, will they have living value as memorials to those who gave their lives during the Second World War. A community centre which became after a few years nothing but a desolate hall would neither serye the community nor remain a fitting memorial." Mr. Heenan states that local authorities desiring subsidies are requested to outline the particular such matters as immediate and proposal and supply information on future development, costs, plans, location, land ownership and factors i elating to cc-ntrol and population needs.
