EASTENERS ATTEND U.S. COLLEGES
AFTERMATH. OF AMERICAN OCCUPATION NEW YORK Despite congestion in American colleges and universities this year, 1,102 students 'ar.e [erf^oiled from countries in the Near East, according to the Christian Science Monitor. A register of these Near East students has been prepared by t^e Near East College Association in response to many queries. In the Association's reeent Oct.obcr issue -of its quarterly, Dr. Ruth C. Sloan, Researc'h Dii'ector, attributcs the growth in cnrollment of Near East students to the increascd jirestige of American education. Frien.lship with American servicemcn and civilians during the war is another reason for the increase, according to Dr. Sloan, who was fonnerly Cultural and Labour Attache of the Uniled States Legation in Egypt. Egypt sent 187 students to the UniteJ. ' States this year, compared with 25 during the 10-year period from 1036 to 1945. Turkey sent 480 -students this yeai', compared to 7 back in 1 928. From Arabia carne 2 students, from Ethiopia 70, Iraix 150, Araq 97, Lebanon 52, Palestine 64, Greece 70, and Syria 29. -Only 47 of the students are women. According to Dr. Sloan, this is due to the fact that it has been less than 25 years since women in some of the Near East nations emerged from their enfo-rced seclusion and entered public schools. . American institutions -chosen by the students from the Near East generally are located- throughout the United States — on bot'h coasts, the ■Middle West, Southwest and South. Fields of study are just as varied. The Turkish students are especially interested in the ©nglish language and various phases of engineering. The Egyptian ^students — many of them graduate workers — chose the most diverse subjects.
