Taupo Airport Again Used For the first time since the late Sir Charles Kingsford Smith in the Southem Cross made flights from that field, four Tiger Moth maehines of the New Pylmouth Aero Club have been using the old aerodrome at Taupo for sightseeing flights over the lake and iMount Tauhara. Many visitors have taken the opportwnity of seeing Taupo and district from the air. Taupo aerodrome is at present an emergqncy landing* ground. White I sland Survey A party of seven, headed by Dr. W. M. Hamilton, of the Department Of Scientific and Industrial Research, left Rotorua yesterday for White Island, where they will make a comprehensive departmental survey. Included in the party are two geologists, two ormithologists, and a botanist. The party will remain on the voleanie island for about a week, during which time a rnotion picture of the phenomena will he taken by a cameraman from the Government Film Studios in Wellington. It is some time since a survey was made of the island. Mt. Egmont Now Unsafe The ascent of Mount Egmont is unsafe at present, even for experienced mountaineers, according to two members of the executive of the Stratford Mountain Club, Messrs G. Close and E. Tooley. They stated that the snow on Egmont was particularly heavy for this time of the year and that both the snow and the weather were uneertain. Because of heavy snow, an accident on the tracks on the northern slopes could involve a maximum fall of 1500 feet, and on the eastern side off the usual tracks, a climber could slide a considerable distance. The snow near the summit is often icy and dangerous. More Occupants of Motor Camp Although the .numbe)- of cars that used the Ranolf Street motor camp during the holiday period hasLiot exceeded nor yet approximated the prewar ffigures, a healthy increase on motorised holiday-makers over the past six years is obsex*ved. Since December 20 last year 2700 cars have . used the camp, and the average numher of occupants per car is estimated at four. The camp reached its peak occupancy on New Year's Eve, when 800 vehicles were parked in it. The camp's capacity is 1500 vehicles, and the largest niumbpr of cars to be parked there overnight that can be recalled was 1100, during the ;Christ-mas-'Xew Year holiday period of 193738.
