STEVENAGE RENAMED SILKIINIGRAD
LOOT>ON Stevenage, the first township due 'or expansion under the Government's dan to build satellite cities around London, awoke one morning to find its name unofficially changed to "Sillcingrad." Mr. L. Silkin, Minister for Town and Country Planning, was given a iwo-hour verbal drubbing by Stevenage people when he went there in May to tell them about the coming :hanges. They protested that they did not vant their quota of the 1-million people who are to be moved from nner London under the Government scheme. Stevenage has since been the scene . )f the biggest yrganised campaign 'n Britain against the proposals, and he name-changing gibe was the latsst move. Opponents of the scheme did a ;horough job one night. Plastered on every board which bore the name Stevenage were placards bearing 'Silkingrad." The main indication board at the railway station and even station seats carried the new placar;!. Police hiuiriried to the station- to nvestigate.
