ASHBURTON SUFFERS SEVERE HAILSTORM

ASHBURTON, Last Night. An area of Ashburton County bounded by the railway and the sea and the Hinds and Ashburton Rivers experienced a most severe hailstorm on Saturday afternoon, crops worth thousands of pounds being damaged. The stones varied in size from marbles to golf balls, with some as large as tennis balls. Ryegrass and barley were a complete loss in the worst affected area, and oats in an advanced state suft'ered. Turnips and rape were cift about, but wheat stood up fairly well. In the Ashburton borough skylights and glass houses suffered severely.
