New Year's Day Shoot S-portsmen from. many parts of the North Island gathered in Rotorua on Wednesday to take part in the New Year's Day open shoot, sponsored by fche Rotorua Rod and Gun Club. The shoot was held on the club's field at Ngapuna, and was witnessed by well over 100 spectators. All four event§ were very well patr^aised, the highest mumber of entries '('62), being in the opening qontest, 'a five-bird eyeopener. The stand-prd. of shooting was remarkably ihigh, and t'he opening event provided eight possibles. This, even out of the relatively large entries, indicates some good markmanship. All other events were also keenl/ contested, and no marksman obtained single and undisputed honours. Before the first eyent was shot off, the president of the Rotorua Rod and Gun Club, Mr. J. F. Thomas, welcomed members from other clu'bs and visitors. The referee was Mr. A. A. McLeant, • of the Hamilton Gun Club. Details: — - Five-Bird Eye-Opener: A. L. Byrne (Auckland), 'L. G. Bedford (Auckland), L. G. Curtis (Brigh'am's Creek), T. S. Henry, E. Duncan (Hamilton), R. J. Goodwin (Taihape), E. Green (Matamata), D. Hyauiason (Metropolitan). All possibles. The prize money was divided. Fifteen-Bird' £30 Trop'hy Handicap, with option'al sweep: L. G. Curtis 1; W. 'L. Brinkworth (Hamilton) 2; D. Mitchell (Hamilton) 3. Winners of Sweep: Brinkworth and Curtis tied, lst. G. Hardy, (Metropolitan), C. Higgie (Ngaruawahia), C. Benton (Hamilton) and D. Mitchell divided place honours. . £100 Open Shoot: J. Parldnson (Rotorua) 1; D. Mitchell 2; W. J. McMiken (Hamilton) 3. Ten-Bird Sweep: E. Green, W. J. McMikfen, L. G.' Curtis, H. Bartley (Morrinsville) and A. G. Bartlett (Cambridge) all shot possibles and divided the prize-money.
