OFFICIAL GARB FOR WOMEN CRICKETERS
The offijcial cricket uniform for the ' 1937 Australian women's team which . visited England was a divided skirt, | reaching to one inch above the knee, a shirt blouse, white hat with green under the brim, and white lisle j stockings. ' Now, white lisle stockings are the , bone of contention among cricketers. ! A serious discussion took place at a | meeting of the Australian Women's 1 Cricket Council on the niceties oi' ^ whether cricketers should wear long , .stockings or be brazen enough to sport soeks. \ A Melbourne paper comments upon the discussion with a sly taunt. Nev j South Wales, it says known of course, for its rugged conservatism, 1 was in favour of exposing the knees j only and wearing long, calf-length socks, while Victoria, always such a 1 daring State, was brazen enough to ask for sockettes! i "After the guiding lights of the council had weighed this revolution- j ary change in their minds, and corsidered whether bare legs would have ; a demoralising effect on the ancient game of cricket," it continues, "they heaved a sigh, and amended the rule in favour of socks. But, and it is a big 'but' for cricketers, the decision applied only to interstate and locai matches. So it will be interesting to j see whether the council relaxes the | ruling and permits the Australian team to take the field in s'hort socks i against the English gixls in the pro- | gressive year of 1947."
