AUCKLAND, Last Night. The story of the mass evacuatlon of a Pacific island, comparaLIe in modern times only witjff that of Bikini, was told wheh the Union Company's motorship Matua arrived here yesterday, after carrying' out the; special mission of - removing almost the entire population of the Tongan Island of Niuafoti to the capital of the group, NukuaJ lofa. - : Driven from their home by An eruption and fears of a further upheaval, 1258 natives crowded aboard the 2100-ton evacuation ship to seek e. new and more peaceful life on Another island. Only 13 days' nofcice was given the islanders of the Matua's call. 4 ,, Because of space restrictions ia the ship, the natives were told that they could not take all their simple* belongings with them.
